Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Domain
A domain is a name you can register with the extension of .co.uk, .com, .org … and many others. Each extension is it’s own entity, meaning that if you own domainname.co.uk you do not automatically own domainname.com or any other variation unless you purchase these as well. A lot of companies in the UK may purchase the two most common domain extensions .co.uk and .com and point both to the same website. This makes is easier for people to find you online.
Your domain name should ideally be the same name as your business. If this name is taken, you can search for alternatives that can still represent your business in a positive way. NTW Web Design will take care of all of this for you, or you can visit here to look for a good name.
Why would I want Webmail?
Rather than asking potential clients to get in touch via a generic email such as a hotmail or gmail account, it’s far more professional to have an email address with your domain name in it. This also allows you to add a professional email address to all of your marketing. Webmail provides a way of accessing your email online from anywhere. You can also configure a local email client to download your email to your computer, if that is your preference. NTW Web Design will take care of your webmail for you.
What is Webspace?
Webspace is just a space on a server on the internet. This is where your website will live. Your domain name will point to this space so when people visit your domain they will automatically be taken to your website. Web hosting isn’t free as it does incur a monthly fee. I would either look at Ionos for web hosting, or let NTW Web Design find the best deal for you!
Although you could potentially register a domain in one place and rent webspace in another, it is best practice to have the same company host both for you. This keeps things simple. We like simple!
Can I edit my own content?
Absolutely! Once your website is complete and live on the internet, I can provide you with a login so you can add content via a simple dashboard.
What do you need from me?
The main thing is content. A few lines about your business or you to describe to the visitor what you are all about. What is it that you offer and why they should use your services or view your content?
It is also a good idea to have a theme in mind – colours, fonts, images – a general feel of how the website should represent you and/or your business.
What is a favicon?
A favicon is that little icon you see in the tab of your internet browser when you visit a page. It also often appears next to the name of a bookmark. If you already have a logo in image format and are able to supply this at a size of 16px x 16px, then it can be added. If not, NTW Web Design can create a simple icon for you.
Can you provide a logo?
Yes! A simple logo can be created and used for your website as part of the package. Please bear in mind though that my skill-set is directed at website design and development. If you require a logo that is a little bit special – a bit fancy – you may be better off looking to get a logo created for you by a specialist.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. This, in basic terms, means the website is written with search engines in mind. This involves using keywords in text, structuring the text blocks correctly, adding headings in the correct places…and so on. All this is so the search engine’s indexers (such as Google) can read your website correctly and determine its content easily. Adding good SEO helps your site to climb the search engine’s rankings. The easier it is to find, the better the chances are that Google will display it high up in a search result.
How can I tell Google about my website?
It is always better to tell Google about your website, rather than waiting for it to be indexed. To submit your website to Google, a free Google account is required. From there we can submit the website and inform Google of all the necessary information. Again, NTW Web Design can do this for you.
